Morning Solstice

Tired of Sleeping

Oh Mom, the dreams are not so bad
It’s just that there’s so much to do
And I’m tired of sleeping

Oh Mom, that man he ripped out his lining
He tore out a piece of his body
To show us his “clean quilted heart”

Oh Mom, the bird on the string is hanging
Her bones are twisting and dancing
She’s fighting for her small life

Oh Mom, I wonder when I’ll be waking
It’s just that there’s so much to do
And I’m tired of sleeping

Whole

I remember the last time I saw your face
I still taste your last kiss goodbye
I reached out to touch you through miles and through days
But still this emptiness won’t fade

You make me feel like I’m whole
You make me feel like I’m whole
But I dread the empty space you always leave behind
It makes me feel like there’s a hole
In my soul

The Hart of Hearts

This week’s Shirt.Woot Derby theme is “Heart”. I wanted my design to be straightforward but subtle (since I can imagine there will be a lot of “heart shapes placed over the heart-ish area on the chest”), plus if you know me you know I love drawing animals… so, the Hart of Hearts was born.

Check out the design (placement on the shirt and everything) and vote if you can, please ‘n thanks :)

The shading on this isn’t something I’m unfamiliar with artistically but it’s a method I haven’t used in a shirt design before. I’ll definitely take this somewhere if woot doesn’t pick it up, because I want to wear it!

Vulpes Victoriana

My entry for this week’s Shirt.Woot Derby, theme: The Letter V!

Description I’m just going to copy/paste from the Derby submission:
This design represents the 11 uncontested members of the genus Vulpes – there is a twelfth member of Vulpes, the Arctic Fox, but I chose to omit it since it’s also sometimes listed as a member of the genus Alopex.

They are, from left to right:
Cape fox (Vulpes chama), Pale fox (Vulpes pallida), Fennec fox (Vulpes zerda), Tibetan Sand fox (Vulpes ferrilata), Ruppell’s fox (Vulpes rueppelli), Blanford’s fox (Vulpes cana), Kit fox (Vulpes macrotis), Bengal or Indian fox (Vulpes bengalensis), Corsac fox (Vulpes corsac), Swift fox (Vulpes velox), and the little baby is the standard Red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

I’ve dressed them in a variety of Victorian-styled clothing, in keeping with the theme of V (and because Victorian stuff is kinda cool). A lot of time and research went into this, and I hope it shows :)

I’m really excited about this design, since I think it makes for a great design AND a great illustration on its own (it’s hard to find where the two overlap). If you can, please vote :)

Unrelated, today starts the massive undertaking of the “Make Something Cool Everyday” project! I’ll be adding some links, and possibly a separate page write-up, with info about the project and the people who are doing it. Let’s make 2010 full of Creativity and Awesome :)

A Flock of Birds

…bird ACEOs, anyway.

If you want to see a bigger version than what’s linked in the thumbnail, you can SUPERSIZE.

Thanks to everyone who suggested birds, y’all had some great ideas and I was excited to do them. :D Here’s the full rundown:

Row 1: Blue jay, greater prairie-chicken, Gentoo penguin, Blackburnian warbler
Row 2: American kestrel, violet-green swallow, smooth-billed ani, ringed plover
Row 3: Scarlet macaw, northern cardinal, great horned owl, peacock
Row 4: Cassowary, Mandarin duck, great hornbill, ruby-throated hummingbird

now I just gotta… cut ‘em all out… very carefully :[

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Wheel in the Sky

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas :)

This is my entry for this week’s Shirt.Woot Derby. The theme is “Renew” (which I take as Renewal), and there is a restriction that all designs may use only white ink.

It’s basically a hodgepodge pastiche of various cultural symbols that represent renewal. And it reminded me of Journey, thus the title. :D (the scarab pushes the sun around the sky, which is “the wheel” in question as far as I am aware)

Feathergirl in Blue

One of two designs for this week’s shirt.woot derby, I adapted this design for woot because this week’s theme is “Birds”!

Justice

I used to do “word art” like this when I was in high school, sometimes on its own but usually as an overlay to a drawing. I was going over a paper I wrote in 2005 and this line jumped out at me, and I knew I wanted to do something with it.

justicetext

I’m not really a fan of “words on a shirt” but I feel like this could work as a white text on black design…

the fonts are Dead Secretary, Darling, and Bleeding Cowboys, all of which I collected from various free font sites on the internet.

Chilibird!

A little gift for my boyfraaaaaaaand :D this may be something about liking spicy foods and Jimmy Buffet, but it’s my understanding that this moniker was fairly randomly chosen…

chilibird

Thank you to Mark for singing about Chili’s Baby Back Birds. :P

Stitches

my final painting project for the semester, completed. I think if I had to describe this painting in few words, I’d use “ooey gooey”.

and here’s a fun detail shot.

some wounds never heal…
