Morning Solstice

This week’s Shirt.Woot Derby theme is “Heart”. I wanted my design to be straightforward but subtle (since I can imagine there will be a lot of “heart shapes placed over the heart-ish area on the chest”), plus if you know me you know I love drawing animals… so, the Hart of Hearts was born.

The shading on this isn’t something I’m unfamiliar with artistically but it’s a method I haven’t used in a shirt design before. I’ll definitely take this somewhere if woot doesn’t pick it up, because I want to wear it!

Quick little sketchy thing of a character I made back in high school. I’ve been meaning to revisit some of these worlds and ideas, since they’re not completely terrible; they just need to be updated out of the “I made this in high school” mentality.

it’s also sort of an exercise in proving I am a master at drawing really awkward, uncomfortable poses. whoops.

This is getting closer to what I was trying to accomplish the other day with the beagle and the bee (which I said looked nothing like my original plan!).

I used a tutorial to get that “brushed metal” look. it nearly crashed Illustrator about four times, and it had my CPU running full-tilt. I may have been doing it wrong.

Anyway, “beedog” generally refers to a dog that is dressed to look like a bee, but for me it’s kind of an in-joke with a friend who was trying to draw a dragon with a mouse in MS Paint. and instead he drew beedog. I’m trying to conceptualize it into a logo form, mostly for fun but also to learn more of illustrator’s thingies. practice with practical design isn’t a bad idea either.

this idea was spawned by a conversation I had with some friends while at Arby’s. I don’t remember why jellyfish came up, but I started shouting about how they’re basically just floating stomachs with enough poison to either kill you or seriously fuck you up. ISN’T THAT TERRIFYING?? my brother was stung by a jellyfish in Mexico this one time and his whole arm went numb and at the time we didn’t know that “pee on yourself” was a viable option, so we spent a good deal of time just freaking out. lol.

anyway, one of my friends said something about how he envisioned my terrifying description of a jellyfish as some kind of late-night TV commercial. I hastily scribbled a sketch down on a little pad of paper I had, and here we are now. Jellyfish. POISONOUS. FLOATING. STOMACH.

I spent way too much time on this, but now I know how to use illustrator :V

Nothing very exciting here. I’m still trying to get more comfortable using Illustrator and designing from scratch with it. No sketch here, no drawing; all done with the mouse, just making shapes and manipulating them.

I didn’t really accomplish much from this exercise since I still don’t know how to make the gradients work the way I want to, I can’t join shapes the way I was trying to, and this looks nothing like my original plan (which involved dogs and bees but in a very different arrangement and aesthetic). Tomorrow I’ll hit up some tutorials and try again.

Another one for A Story of Fuzzy. “The Punk Rocker”.

Honestly, if I was going to draw “a” (generic) punk rocker, she would look nothing like this. I’m just taking my cues from the photos that are already on the site. I know that a person doesn’t really have to dress to their preferred style 24/7, though. I’m only goth about three days out of the year.

But those are three glorious days, trust me.

Another Friday, another woot derby entry. The theme this week is “Palindromes”. I selected “Do Geese See God” as mine.

Blood is everywhere! The vicious tiger shows no mercy.

I have to wear jeans/long pants in my house, because otherwise the VICIOUS TIGER otherwise known as Rusty Shackleford-Venture will not stop biting my feet. It’s inexplicable and he only does it when I’m in shorts. My parents have observed this phenomenon AND done everything they can to discipline him otherwise, but it’s no good.

Little shit purrs the whole time he’s doing it, too.

Completed image of the second animal from the Chinese zodiac, the Ox. The first six are done!

I was actually worried about how this one was going to look at the marker stage, but I think the textures are my favorite of this series so far. it’s really the only “shaggy” critter in the set, though (my dog looks scruffy, but no shag). I’ll probably drop these first six on etsy tomorrow as I continue to work on the rest of the set
