Morning Solstice

A Flock of Birds

…bird ACEOs, anyway.

If you want to see a bigger version than what’s linked in the thumbnail, you can SUPERSIZE.

Thanks to everyone who suggested birds, y’all had some great ideas and I was excited to do them. :D Here’s the full rundown:

Row 1: Blue jay, greater prairie-chicken, Gentoo penguin, Blackburnian warbler
Row 2: American kestrel, violet-green swallow, smooth-billed ani, ringed plover
Row 3: Scarlet macaw, northern cardinal, great horned owl, peacock
Row 4: Cassowary, Mandarin duck, great hornbill, ruby-throated hummingbird

now I just gotta… cut ‘em all out… very carefully :[

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bird ACEOs 4

Colored the Ani and the Plover.

I’ve been posting some sneak-peaks (Scarlet Macaw, Northern Cardinal, Peacock) and progress pictures (Great Horned Owl) on my Twitter, so be sure and check that out if it interests you!

Bird ACEOs 3

Some day, my scanner and I will make peace, and it will make my drawings look as nice on the computer screen as they do on paper. But considering it’s probably at least… six? years old, we’re holding out okay.

Bluejay, Greater Prairie-Chicken, American Kestrel, and Violet-Green Swallow, now in color. :)

Still open for suggestions on other species of bird! Most of the ones I like off the top of my head (like the Kakapo!) are basically solid-colored in the face, so they’re not as good for this project…

Wheel in the Sky

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas :)

This is my entry for this week’s Shirt.Woot Derby. The theme is “Renew” (which I take as Renewal), and there is a restriction that all designs may use only white ink.

It’s basically a hodgepodge pastiche of various cultural symbols that represent renewal. And it reminded me of Journey, thus the title. :D (the scarab pushes the sun around the sky, which is “the wheel” in question as far as I am aware)

The Star or the Angel-

Sara can’t decide which one to put on top of her tree.

I was doing so good about posting every day! and then I got busy and then I got sick. :[

Starting on New Years’, myself and a bunch of other people are starting this “make something cool everyday” project, and I’m hoping that the activity and encouragement of other creative folks will prod me to get more work done as well. I’ll post links and all that once it’s underway.

(pick the star, Sara. an angel would be way too meta.)

Tori ni Nari

This is the second of my two designs for this week’s shirt.woot derby, theme: birds! The title of this means “Become a bird”, and it’s taken from a song by my favorite singer/songwriter, “Rasen (Spiral)” by Chihiro Onitsuka.

Feathergirl in Blue

One of two designs for this week’s shirt.woot derby, I adapted this design for woot because this week’s theme is “Birds”!

Bird ACEOs 2

More work on my bird ACEOs, which kind of went on the back burner for a bit. Some color and happy to break up the series of Jacks I’m working on. I hear he’s not very popular. ;)

somebirds

Gentoo penguin, Blackburnian warbler, smooth-billed ani, and a ringed plover! The ani and the plover look kind of herp derp, hopefully color will fix that. :/ new rule for this project is no more all-black birds, because half the point is lost when you can’t see the overlapping lines…

it looks like I never uploaded the colored bluejay and prairie chicken on here, so that will be forthcoming as well.

Jack the Baker

Mark said something about seeing Jack in oven mitts, and I was talking about him baking a pie, so…

I imagine Sara’s saying something like “this better not be that cat from earlier…”

jackpie

The humor in these pictures is probably not apparent unless you’ve read the comic, so please do if you haven’t already. Or not. But then you miss the joke. It’s only 12 pages. You also get to see how inconsistent my character drawing is. And non-lazy inking! Yay!

But yeah, if Jack bakes you a pie, you probably don’t want to eat that.

Apple Jack

Assuming this project doesn’t die in flames like my larger ones tend to do, I think I could potentially pull some really lush, pretty illustrations out of sketches like these.

Jack’s anatomy is awkward. I don’t blame myself for drawing him in the same bland poses most of the time. :P

applejack

Of course, Jack lives off human flesh and negative emotions, so he’s probably picking that apple for Sara. And then he’ll probably eat it anyway just to make her sad. Or maybe drop it on the ground. Or bake it into a pie, but it’ll be like… an apple and people pie. Or a regular pie for the purpose of luring out people to eat. Jack’s imagination when it comes to being a general jerk is limitless. (I was avoiding making a jack-ass joke, but then this statement happened.)

I like drawing trees, but I hate drawing leaves. Go figure.
