Morning Solstice

Julie and The Squeaky Christmas Cactus

It’s a love story. Sort of.

squeakycactus

I know it’s a saguaro that stands for the typical Arizona Christmas tree, but it’s a prickly pear (of some variety I don’t know enough about to specify) that has been leaning against my window and squeaking all day. And yes, a hoodie and flip flops. That is how I roll in 65 degree weather.

Sorry about the typography, I haven’t redownloaded my eleventybillion fonts since switching to Win7 and I barely know how to use illustrator, even though I took a whole class in it. Hah. D:

Triumph of the Skies

My design for this week’s shirt.woot contest! The theme is Christmas and Holiday Songs Illustrated. I chose to work with Hark, The Herald Angels Sing. :)

New rule: less thinking, more drawing.

Bunny

Simple thing. Based on some hilarious conversation over IHOP with THE DREAMING (I totally went to IHOP with three of the guys from The Dreaming. it was amazing.), and at the insistence of a friend, I am making a t-shirt that says “Carlton Swerves for Rabbits”… and this is the rabbit.

Isn’t he cute? I’d swerve for him too.

Feathergirl Inked

Just a follow-up on the previous post. Now that it’s inked, I have to decide if there’s anything else to do with it, and if so, what. Hopefully inspiration will strike soon, and swiftly. Like a ninja.

And yes, I changed the colors. Isn’t that fun? :D

Feathergirl

This week’s shirt.woot contest isn’t inspiring me to design anything for it, so I figured I’d design something for myself instead.

I will probably ink this and then play around with shirt colors/placements. Designing is fun! And so is frilly nouveau garbage.

Bird ACEOs 1

I’m currently working on a series of ACEOs (basically, 2.5inx3.5in “mini art” pieces) based on one of my favorite subjects: birds! The current project is hopefully going to be 16 drawings, and if I’m not burned out after that I will do more. I might also try changing subjects (though there are literally thousands of bird species to work with).

As of this writing I have inks for 5 cards done with another two species already picked. They are: blue jay, greater prairie-chicken, gentoo penguin, blackburnian warbler, American kestrel, smooth-billed ani, and violet-green swallow. When I’m stumped on a species to do next, I’ll just randomly pick from various lists of birds until I find one that looks interesting, but if any of you lovely readers have a species that you like, feel free to make suggestions! I’ve found that birds with complex colors, patterns, or shapes work best for this method of drawing.

Here’s the first two (blue jay and prairie-chicken). I’ll be slowly posting more over the coming days while I work. :)

If you want the technical arty stuff, I’m basically taking anywhere from four to a dozen photos of my selected species as reference, then drawing sketches on top of modified blind contours on top of full-blind contours and then selectively inking the results. Eventually I’m going to color these. :)
