Morning Solstice

A Giraffe

I think “sketch” is a misnomer for this program. The way color/lines are applied, a more painterly, bottom-up approach is required (general sense first, then working up into detail) rather than the natural preference of digital artwork to be top-down (detail now, color and contrast later).

Incidentally, it’s kind of hard to approach this program with a painterly mindset because the widest brush isn’t very wide at all. As you can see, filling in any area with solid color takes a while, and then there’s inherent transparency which makes it even more difficult to get the “right” color. This same “technique” is used in some other online paint programs (notably Facebook’s graffiti program) but those have a tendency to allow larger brushes, more control over transparency, and so on. Hopefully sketchcast will work some of these problems out soon, because it’s quite fun to use otherwise. :0

oh, and there is a small problem with the real-time recording; while it’s great if you’re talking while drawing, the result in a silent video is that you get periods of time where nothing’s happening because, for example, the artist is having difficulty finding the right color to use. oh well. D:

Crouching Jack

crouching jack

this isn’t much to look at, and it’s from a little while back (before Elegant Sara), but I wanted to make sure I got a post in today because I’m going on a mini-vacation this weekend, and may or may not be posting again until after Sunday.

but yes, Jack’s thin figure and weird animal-like flexibility means he can become very compact if he chooses. case in point: here.

Et Tu, Impasto

Impasto
(photographed with my cell phone again)

Acrylic paints with gel medium, painted with a pallet knife. I’m not really thrilled with the guy’s face, but I’m pleased with the composition over all. You can get some indication of it here, but the photo really does no justice to the amount of texture in the painting, and I mean that quite literally. Impasto is about thick, thick paint, and the stuff has hills and valleys and if you look askance at it the light plays off different areas in different ways and it’s super-fun.

based on a still-life setup, but I made up a bunch of stuff so it’s not like… uncreative or anything. the colors of the setup are pretty much completely different.

Sketchcast video

there’s this new thing called sketchcast, it’s kind of like youtube but it makes a recording of your drawing. you can do it with a voice recording along with the drawing, but I’ve passed on that for the test. the video itself is a little long, but you can drag the little slider at the bottom to something more your speed if you’d like. it’s not “finished” just because of how long it was taking.

I might do more of these, I’ll post ‘em if I do. for now I think it’s a little too awkward to work with.

Sitty Kitty

sitty kitty

just a simple postcard-sized watercolor I made for my mom, since it’s her birthday this week :) some of the colors might look a little funky because they scanned weird, and then I edited them digitally to get them closer to the original…

bad kitty, sitting on the table. psssh.

Ruby Tuesday

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don’t matter if it’s gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows, she comes and then she goes

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who is gonna hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I’m gonna miss you

ruby tuesday

Don’t ask her why she needs to be so free
She’s gonna tell you it’s the only way to be
She just can’t be chained
To a life where nothing’s gained
And nothing’s lost, but such a cost

‘There’s no time to lose’, I heard her say
You gotta catch your dreams before they run away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams and you may lose your mind
Is life unkind?

self-portrait with some modifications (I took a photo of myself and drew over it because I can’t really pull a nice profile drawing out of my ass at 3am)

it's space

how exciting.

space

I was going to put in a landscape and such but I’m not really feeling up to it today :[

Mountains with Building

building

such an imaginative title, I know :D

I need to work on backgrounds, so… here’s some scenery. The building looks too close to the mountains, I think. And the grassy area is too flat. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with it for what it is.

The building is not anything in particular, but it’s pretty clearly influenced by some of the local architecture (adobe-built and/or mexican-styled structures).

hookfishing

hookfishing

it’s a mansharkfishthing. started as something else; something with hair, but we can see how it turned out. :0

I should probably think more about what I’m drawing, because then I’ll have more to say about the drawing when it’s done. :x oops.

I potentially have another project (personal, not school-related) in the works, but I don’t want to jinx it as I tend to do. D:

Conejo

because it sounds more interesting than “rabbit”.

conejo

fear the floating head of the lepus! or something like that.

do you like fluffy bunnies?
